The recent face off between CNN and “Punk’d” star/Mr. Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, and their quest to be the first to reach 1,000,000 followers on twitter made headlines around the globe. Kutcher won, but it inspired Oprah to get in on the fun — “tweeting”  live for the first time on her show. Within days, she had nearly 500,000 twitter followers and the micro-blogging site itself experienced a 43 percent increase in traffic — thus igniting a frenzy among the media, bloggers and social media experts coining it the “Oprah Effect.”

Although twitter is currently the number one ranked fastest growing social media site, according to research from Nielsen online, sites like MySpace, facebook and LinkedIn all rank higher in total number of monthly unique visitors.

So whether your brand is best suited for facebook, twitter or one of the thousands of other social media platforms available, if you haven’t already, it’s time to jump on the social media bandwagon.

Below are ten reasons why your company should be using social media marketing:

  1. Generate awareness
  2. Manage brand reputation
  3. Foster customer loyalty
  4. Promote product and services
  5. Offer increased interaction and engagement with target audiences
  6. Help monitor trends and breaking news
  7. Create increased media opportunities
  8. Enhance company impact at events
  9. Provide networking opportunities for clients and vendors
  10. Cost-effective marketing strategy
